Tomato juice to Prevent Osteoporosis



Healthy lifestyle plays an important role in the early prevention of bone loss or osteoporosis. The team of researchers from the University of Toronto, Canada, recommends consumption of two glasses of tomato juice a day for stronger bones.

As quoted by the Daily Mail, the suggestion was based on a study of 60 postmenopausal women aged 50-60 years. In this study, they were asked to stop the consumption of foods containing tomatoes for a month.

As a result, there is increased levels of N-telopeptide in the blood. N-telopeptide are natural chemicals that usually go into the blood when the fragility of the bones.

Over the next four months, participants were divided into three groups with different treatment. The first group was asked to consume tomato juice every day with an average lycopene content of 15 mg. The second group received supplementation with lycopene intake of 35 mg. The last group taking a placebo or bogus supplements.

As a result, a decline in the levels of N-telopeptide in the blood significantly in the group who consumed lycopene supplements and tomato juice. While the women in the group who mengasup plase no change condition.

As stated in the journal Osteoporosis International, two glasses of tomato juice with 15 mg of lycopene levels sufficient to maintain bone strength. Lycopene in tomatoes and even useful as an antioxidant, reducing the risk of heart attack and prostate cancer.
